Electron Cryomicroscopy
Density Visualization
In the last years 3D electron microscopy has emerged as a powerful tool in structural
biology. Recent advantages of this technique have enabled high enough resolutions to
determine elements of the secondary and also atomic structure of proteins.
We have developed tools for Internet-based 3D visualization of electron microscopy
data. Our applications allow the interactive inspection of volume data by balancing
rendering quality and real time performance. For the future we plan the
optional embedding of chemical structures such as proteins into the scene.
Figure 1: Java applet and VRML plug-in; electron cryomicroscopy
volume data of the ribosome of Escherichia coli in 18 Å resolution.
Figure 2: OpenGL application with level-of-detail isosurface
reconstruction; The resolution of the region around the focus point is increased;
electron cryomicroscopy volume data of the ribosome of Escherichia coli
in 13 Å resolution.
